A ONE-DAY ETCHING WITH ELECTRONICS WORKSHOP

    INSTRUCTOR

    Martha Fitzmier

Martha uses free computer software to design patterns and an inexpensive die-cutting machine to cut the designs out of self-adhesive vinyl that becomes the resist for etching metal.

The prepared metal is placed in a salt water etching solution and connected to a 12-volt battery.  Most patterns can be etched in fewer than 30 minutes.  The vinyl designs can be used on any metal.  The results are amazing in precision, detail and depth.  Click to view PDF of examples of things Martha and Beth and their students have made using this technique.  It is perfect for production work.

This is a 1-day workshop in which you will etch and fabricate several items on copper and nugold.  Silver etching is slightly different and will be demonstrated so you duplicate the process at home.  Beginning, intermediate and advanced metalsmithing students are welcome.

This technique has been used for jewelry and hollowware and Martha is continually delighted to discover new applications that she will share with you in class.

    COST

The tuition for the 1-day workshop is $150.  you will need to bring your own 20-gauge or 22-gauge copper and nugold.  All other equipment and materials will be provided in class.

You will leave with a comprehensive set of instructions and an exhaustive resource list so you can duplicate the process on your own.

Class size is limited to 8 students at G3 Studios on Buford Hwy.

KEUM BOO (attached gold) & ROLLER PRINTING WORKSHOP

    featuring

    Barbara Mann

    August 26, 2017

    9:00 am - 5:00 pm

In this informative and fun one-day workshop students will experiment with the ancient Asian metalwork technique of Keum Boo which is bonding 24Karat gold to silver.  In combination with learning how to attach the gold to silver, students will learn how to add texture to metal by using a jewelers' rolling mill to emboss the surface of the metal.

Students should be able to complete one to three small silver pieces, with gold accents, such as a pair of earrings and/or a pendant.

We will begin by learning how to use a jeweler's saw to cut out the shape desired, and then experiment with texturing using the rolling mill with various embossing materials such as paper, metal screen, lace, plastic netting, snake skin, corn husks, etc.  After we have the shape with texture, students will learn how to bond the gold foil to the silver.  Next, students will learn how to patina, polish, drill if necessary (for earring wires or pendant balls) and then enjoy their completed, beautifully textured and colorful silver and gold creations.

    When:  Saturday, August 26, 2017
                 9 am - 5 pm

    Cost:    $100

This class is suitable for all levels, from beginner to advanced.

    Where:  G3 Studio
    5353 Buford Hwy. NE
    Doraville, GA 30340

Materials used in the workshop can be purchased from the instructor for $35.00 (subject to market price) and include:
