    Let the Roll-Out Begin!

The G3 Studio is beginning a roll-out of its
    Open Studio/Bench Rental Program!

The G3 Open Studio is a friendly, fully equipped community studio space with a welcoming atmosphere in a convenient location.  Join us to collaborate, share equipment, enjoy the company of others, and add your inspiration to our creative energy!

    Certification:

As a safety measure, G3, like many other Open Studio/Bench Rental programs throughout the country, will require everyone who uses the Studio - metal artists and studio monitors - to be trained and certified on all Studio equipment. This is for the protection of the Studio users as well as the Studio equipment.

The cost of this one-time training is $20 and includes 2 free hours of Bench time to be used at your convenience.

Once certified, individuals are eligible to work in the Studio and, if desired, to volunteer as a Studio monitor. Studio monitors will sign up for 4-hour shifts during which time they will be responsible for checking people in and out, and for the safe use of the Studio. Monitors ‘earn’ Bench hours during their shifts, are NOT expected to teach, and are able to work on their own projects while supervising those working in the Studio.

Certification will be available at the G3 Studio on the following dates and hours:

    • Saturday, April 22nd from 12:30pm - 2pm
    • Tuesday, April 25th from 7pm - 9pm
    • Monday, May 1st from 7pm - 9pm

    Bench Credit Purchase:

Bench Credits are available for purchase and allow you the use of the G3 Studio and all of its equipment.

Introductory Bench Credits rates* are available in 10-hour increments:

    • 10 hours @ $100 ($10/per hour)
    • 20 hours @ $170 ($8.50/per hour)
    • 30 hours @ $180 ($6/per hour)
    • 40 Hours @ $200 ($5/per hour)

*Prices are good until December when we will re-evaluate both cost and usage.

     Beginning Open Studio/Bench Hours are:

    • Mondays
    • 10am-2pm
    • 2pm-6pm
    • 6pm-10pm
    • Saturdays 1pm-5pm
    • Sundays 1pm-5pm

Additional days and hours will be added as we grow!

For the convenience of those who wish to store their tools at G3, Rolling Tool Cabinets and Tool Totes will be available for monthly rental.

    CUTTLEFISH CASTING WORKSHOP

    featuring

    Barbara Mann

    May 20-21, 2017

This workshop will give participants the skills and inspiration to cast jewelry or a small-scale object in sterling silver. Using the ancient technique of cuttlebone casting, students will learn to make molds into which molten metal will be poured. Within minutes after casting, the molds are opened and the metal objects are ready for finishing. Students will learn how to use a jeweler's saw, hand files, abrasive paper and how to patina metal and use a rotary tumbler for polishing.

The cuttlefish is a squid-like creature whose skeleton can be found on the beach. It is soft enough to carve and has a beautiful wood grain-like pattern which yields a rich texture on the surface of the cast metal. There are several ways to prepare the molds from the cuttlebone, including direct carving, making a mold cavity by pressure (pushing something hard into the soft surface of the mold) or by creating a negative space in a sheet of mat board which is placed between the two halves of the mold. This may sound complicated, but it is not. The process is fun and students should be able to create one to two pieces during the day.

During the workshop, we will talk about other methods of casting, alloying metal, when to cast and when to fabricate a metal project.

On the second day of the workshop, students will learn how to make a three-piece cuttlefish mold, how to use “embeddable” findings to make bails and jump rings, how to cast stones in place and which stones are suitable. The instructor will have several kinds of stones for students to purchase including cubic zirconias, raw diamonds, sapphires, rubies and meteorites. We will look at and discuss various mold making materials such as milliput, sculpy, clay and wood which can be used for repeating shapes and forms. There will be a demonstration of bi-metal casting, casting onto pierced sheet metal and forming and using wire as a cast element. As a finale, we will cast silver into various materials such as broom straw, peanuts and beans to achieve some fun and interesting forms and textures.

    When:  Saturday - Sunday
     May 20 - 21, 2017
       10 am - 5 pm

    Cost:    $200

    Where:  G3 Studio
       5353 Buford Highway NE
     Doraville, GA 30340

    Materials Needed:

Students may bring their own clean sterling silver metal to cast, or they can purchase metal from the instructor at a cost of approximately $22.00 per ounce. (The price is based on the market price of silver at that time. The cost of silver is not included in class fee). Each casting will weigh around 1/2 ounce to one ounce. That weight is a Troy ounce, not an avoirdupois ounce or an apothecary or a gram weight. We will talk about that too.
