    Anticlastic Raising with Michael Good

    April 10-14, 2017

Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Michael will lead students through a series of exercises that are designed to teach the principles of how metal is moved from flat sheet into non-definitive forms. Students will have a short time to practice each stage in order to digest the concepts presented before moving on to the next exercise. The goal is for students to gain enough of a foundation in the session to be able to return to their own surroundings to practice at their leisure. The course is designed for all skill levels including those with no previous metalsmithing experience. Michael’s philosophies and enthusiastic style make for an unforgettable experience! Complete tool kits will be provided and are optionally available to purchase after each session.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania of Belgian parents, Michael Good is a designer/sculptor/jeweler whose side interests include physics, philosophy, archeology, and kayaking. Primarily self-taught, Michael is known around the world as the master of Anticlastic Raising. He has been exploring metal forming for over 35 years and has given workshops for professional organizations, universities, and schools in North America and Europe. His work is represented in stores, galleries, museums, and private collections around the world. Visit Michael's website at http://www.michaelgood.com

Helen "strives to make metal mellifluouse".  Who could resist such delicious creations?

Helen believes that the arts, combining metal and stone are a hallmark of humanity and she is passionate about creating bold designs with subtle textures, and articulated movement, making the metal sing and gems glitter.

As a professional artist, instructor and juror of many prestigious art festivals, Helen has amassed years of experience.  Topics to be discussed will be:

    1. Getting started.  Tents, set up and display
    2. Applying to shows.  Zapplication, Juried Art Services (JAS) and other online applications
    3. What is a good jury slide presentation.  How a judge views your work.
    4. Getting ready.  Developing, pricing and displaying your body of work.
    5. Sales.  Presenting yourself and your work.

Ms. Blythe-Hart and Griffin have successfully defined and refined their festivalstrategies through years of trial and error.  They are here to share their insights and experience, to help you up the learning curve.  So, gather your questions, some munchies, go to www.georgiagoldsmiths.org to register (we are trying to get a head count) and join us for an invaluable learning opportunity with other members of your metalsmithing community.

All levels of experience are welcome.  Whether you are a neophyte, are just thinking about testing the waters, are a seasoned seller, or are frustrated by failed efforts to get into shows, there will be something here for you!  Come and share your experience.

    CALL TO ARTISTS

    Decatur Arts Festival 2017

    Saturday, May 27 | 10 am - 6 pm

    Sunday, May 28 | 11 am - 5 pm

Space Reservation with Intent to Participate

The prestigious and well-established Decatur Arts Festival is coming up May 27th and 28th.  Georgia Goldsmiths Guild will be participating in the Decatur Arts Festival Artists' Market for our 6th consecutive year.  In 2012 the festival started placing guilds and organizations on the Plaza (close access to MARTA) with wonderful results!  Since then our sales have improved with each year.  Last year our booth generated almost $10,000 in sales.  There will be 6 artists representing GGG and selling their work in our double-sized 20 foot booth.  All artists who are current members of GGG are invited to apply to be selected to be one of the six.  Here are this year's guidelines / rules / policies and costs.

    1. There is a $20 non-refundable application fee this year.
    2. All applicants names will be put into a random drawing.  The first 6 names drawn will be the ones that are "in" for this year and 2 additional names will be drawn to be alternates.
    3. In order to cover the expenses of the booth itself, miscellaneous festivals expenses, credit card fees and the hiring of a laborer, it will cost each artist $185 to participate.  Then 15% of your sales will go to GGG.
    4. All 6 participants will meet as a group with Joanne Smith & Diane Treuman on a date TBD and before May 15th to go over set up and use of Square for all income processing.  All of the sales are processed to GGG directly and within a month participants will receive their 85% share of their sales in a check from GGG.
    5. At the same group meeting (on a date TBD before May 15th) the group will decide logistics for moving, hauling, & return of equipment.  This year there is going to be a laborer with a truck hired to help with the heavy lifting, the moving of all the GGG equipment, the setting up and taking down of the tent, and related tasks.  He will require guidance and assistance from the participants but he will provide much of the muscle!
    6. All 6 participants are responsible for assisting with selecting, picking up & setting up of all GGG equipment on Friday, May 26th and taking down, returning and putting it away on Sunday, May 28th.

If you are interested in being one of the 6 artists:

    1. Email your name, cell number, email address and whether or not you have participated previously to ggg.festivals@gmail.com.  Please put "Participation in Decatur Arts Festival" as the subject.
    2. Pay the $20 non-refundable application fee via the GGG website.

The DEADLINE to receive your information and have your $20 paid is April 8th.  The names of everyone who expresses interest and has paid the $20 through the website will be put into a random drawing, and at the Board meeting on April 10th the names of the participants and the alternates will be drawn.

You will be notified by Friday, April 14th if you are selected.  If you are selected, you must pay your $185 booth fee by May 15th or an alternate will be invited to take your place.

Please note that all participants must commit to being present at the planning meeting, must be present for equipment pick-up & set up, for the duration of the festival, and present for tear down & pack-up and return to storage.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
